Paper Bag Book Cover  (posted 08/05/10)

Kids, this is a craft that needs adult supervision and help, so make sure you get an adult's help before you do this.

Make protective covers for all your schoolbooks using a brown grocery bag and a few paper-folding tricks. Once you learn this technique of folding, get creative and us an old travel map or sturdy decorative paper to cover all your favorite books. Your books will look great at the end of the year and you’ve recycled a brown bag at the same time.

What You Need:
Sturdy paper bag or a roll of brown parcel paper (actually any sturdy paper will do)
Pencil
Book
Stickers, Markers, Colored Pencils, Stamps, Etc. for decorating

What You Do:
1.     Starting at top corner of the bag, cut along the crease to the base of the bag. Next, cut around 3 sides of the bottom flap until you have a large rectangular piece of paper.
2.     Set the book in the center of the paper and use a pencil to draw a line across the top and bottom of the book. Remove the book and crease the lines to make and even fold. The fold should be as tall as your book. Crease well with your fingers or the edge of a ruler.
3.     Place the book in the center of the folded paper. Take the left side of the paper and fold it over and around the front cover of the book to make a flap. Crease the edge. The flap should reach one-fourth of the way across the inside book cover. If it is too long, trim the flap to fit.
4.     Insert the front cover into the slot created by the folded paper until you reach the crease. Repeat for the other side.
5.     Close the front cover of the book, pulling the paper tight across the front of the book.

Viola, you know have a recycled, plain paper canvas to decorate. Use stickers, markers, pencils and more to show your creative side and make it your own!
